Opportunities for Registered Apprenticeship in the Information Technology Sector

A career in information technology is promising for apprentices looking for higher wages and ample job opportunities. Across different job levels, IT industry wages are about 130% higher than in other industries and the median wage is about $105,000. It’s important to note, though, that IT jobs are very diverse, and so are the wages.[1]
Did you know?
- Several IT occupations are expected to grow significantly in number of jobs by 2034:
- Jobs in Cybersecurity Analytics and Engineering are projected to grow 267%,
- Jobs in Software Development and Engineering are projected to grow 225%, and
- Jobs in Web Design are projected to grow 134%. [1]
- A total of 6,300 active apprentices in IT currently exist in the US.
- Apprenticeships in IT have more than doubled in number in the past 5 years.[2]
Registered Apprenticeships in high-growth occupations can be found across the country. These high-demand apprenticeships are detailed on apprenticeship.gov with information on work activities as well as work process schedules for sponsors of new IT apprenticeships:
- Cybersecurity Analyst: Plans and implements computer and information security measures, assesses system vulnerabilities, and implements risk mitigation strategies.
- Software Developer: Designs, develops, and updates computer/network software, analyzes user needs, and develops software solutions, applying principles and techniques of computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis.
- Web Designer/Developer: Designs digital user interfaces/websites, develops and tests functionality to ensure compatibility and usability across browsers or devices.
Competency-Based Occupational Frameworks, created in collaboration with the Urban Institute, are also available on apprenticeship.gov for five different IT occupations, including frameworks for IT Generalists and Database technicians.
